September wird mit dem Track „The Goal“ Cohens musikalischer Nachlass angekündigt – es ist die erste Vorabmusik aus dem brandneuen Album „Thanks For The Dance“, das am 22. November erscheint.

Damien Rice and Feist contributed to the album, Jennifer Warnes sang background vocals, Javier Mas played Leonards own guitar, Daniel Lanois contributed to the sessions

Leonard Cohen was a masterful songwriter, an inimitable musician and poet. In his six-decade career, his work touched the lives of millions – and continues to do so today. With more than 23 million albums worldwide Cohen had an immense influence on the musical posterity, which now echoes posthumously. On September 20, Cohen’s musical estate will be announced with the track „The Goal“ – the first pre-music from the brand-new album „Thanks For The Dance“, which will be released on November 22nd.

The longplayer contains recordings from the time before Leonard Cohen’s death in November 2016 and are now being released. Seven months after his father’s death, Adam Cohen retired to a converted garage in his backyard near Leonard’s house to reunite with his father and be in the company of his voice. From her previous collaboration on „You Want It Darker“ remained some musical sketches, often just vocals. Leonard had asked his son to complete this work.

The remarkable new album was created in a variety of locations. Javier Mas, the great Spanish laudist who had accompanied Leonard on stage during his eight-year tour, flew from Barcelona to Los Angeles to capture the artist’s spirit on Leonard’s own guitar. In Berlin invited Adam at the music event „People Festival“ some friends and fellow campaigners to participate in the album. Damien Rice and Leslie Feist sang. Richard Reed Parry of Arcade Fire played bass. Bryce Dessner from The National played the guitar, composer Dustin O’Halloran can be heard on the piano. The Berlin choir Cantus Domus sang and the S t a r g a z e orchestra played. In Montreal, the famous producer Daniel Lanois stopped by the sessions and miraculously contributed to his sparse arrangements. The Shaar Hashomayim Choir, who played such an important part in creating the sound of the previous album, contributed to a song, and Patrick Watson brought his inimitable talent as a co-producer into a song. Back in Los Angeles, Jennifer Warnes, one of Leonard’s creative flame guardians, sang background vocals and Beck played guitar and Jew’s harp. Michael Chaves, who had so elegantly recorded and mixed the album „You Want It Darker“, did the engineering and mixing.

„The Goal“ lets you dive into the upcoming album for the first time, so it really is an extension of the work of a great, unforgotten Leonard Cohen. “

Damien Rice and Feist contributed to the album, Jennifer Warnes sang background vocals, Javier Mas played Leonards own guitar, Daniel Lanois contributed to the sessions

Infos:

1 Happens to the Heart 4:33
Poem from The Flame, p3

2 Moving On 3:11
Poem from The Flame, p80

3 The Night of Santiago 4:15
from Book of Longing by Philip Glass, CD2 track 4

4 Thanks for the Dance 4:13
Poem from The Flame, p83; The Flame, p103 same as the track 10 from Anjani’s album Blue Alert

5 It’s Torn 2:57
Source unknown but definitely by Leonard Cohen

6 The Goal 1:12
Poem from Book of Longing, p153

7 Puppets 2:39
Poem from Book of Longing, p160

8 The Hills 4:17
might be the poem The Book of Longing from Book of Longing, p1
CD 1 Track 1 from Book of Longing by Philip Glass, is called I Can’t Make the Hills

9 Listen to the Hummingbird 2:00
Poem from The Flame, p65

„The Goal“ ist Leonard Cohens musikalischer Nachlass.
