\n50<\/strong><\/h1>\nThe programme for this anniversary edition of the Montreux Jazz Festival has been constructed like an echo of the historic depth of this Swiss event. Dense and vibrant, this 50th offering merits being examined in detail. It is marked by an array of projects and lineups imagined especially for the occasion, combining great artistic friendships and the promise of fresh new musical talents.<\/strong><\/p>\n On the marquee among others: Neil Young, PJ Harvey, Sigur R\u00f3s, Patti Smith, Lana Del Rey, M83, Muse, Ernest Ranglin and Friends, Scofield Mehldau Guiliana, Christian Scott, Jean-Michel Jarre, Future, Woodkid and Friends, Beirut, Grimes\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n At Montreux, each night counts. Over the 16 days of the Festival, the programming is conceived and organized as lineups, with the aim of creating real substance and meaningful links between the three concert halls. The attention we give to detail reaffirms what makes Montreux special: crafting narratives, celebrating the Festival\u2019s living roots, and generating artistic encounters between all the generations of musicians who have conceptualized, are creating, and will continue to fashion the music of tomorrow. This anniversary is the occasion to underscore what drives the Festival: an insatiable desire to \u201cbe there\u201d, up close and personal, under the spell of music.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n It will all start with Charles Lloyd<\/strong> for an Opening Night<\/em> at the Casino Barri\u00e8re, a sacred hall that once went up in smoke on the water, to which we return this year to host the first American jazz musician who came to the Festival in 1967. He will perform with his new quartet: Jason Moran, Reuben Rogers, <\/strong>and Eric Harland<\/strong>. That same night, Monty Alexander<\/strong>, who will also have top-notch accompaniment, will revisit his landmark album recorded in 1977, Montreux Alexander<\/em>.<\/p>\n At the Stravinski, the inimitable Quincy Jones<\/strong> will direct an event in tribute to his ties of brotherhood with the Festival featuring the Pepe Lienhard Big Band<\/strong>, which will assemble artists from all generations.<\/p>\n How could we not highlight Brazilian dreams<\/strong> with a high-flying multigenerational concert? Montreux\u2019s heart has always bled green and gold, so the stage will welcome in turn Maria Rita<\/strong>, daughter of Elis Regina, Jo<\/strong>\u00e3<\/strong>o Bosco, Ana Carolina<\/strong>, Vanessa Da Mata<\/strong>, and more! Ang\u00e9lique<\/strong> Kidjo<\/strong>, a faithful friend of Montreux, will be surrounded by A\u1e63a<\/strong>,<\/strong> the Trio Teriba<\/strong>, Lura<\/strong>, and the peerless voice of the Ivory Coast\u2019s Dobet Gnahor\u00e9<\/strong>, for a carte blanche around African Women All-Stars<\/em>.<\/p>\n The now traditional Montreux Jazz Academy Project will bring back to the Club the talented young guns from the 2015 Academy under the guidance of their mentors Yaron Herman<\/strong> and Ziv Ravitz<\/strong>.<\/p>\n And then, for love of Montreux, Woodkid<\/strong>, although not touring anywhere else, has decided to invite some of his highest-profile friends (mum\u2019s the word on who!) for a unique creation.<\/p>\n Two other monuments of Montreux history will be celebrated in Creations: \u201cBowie: The Swiss Years\u201d<\/strong> and a nod to the foundational album Swiss Movement<\/em> <\/strong>by Les McCann and Eddie Harris, revisited by the musical collective Stade<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n The mixing of genres so dear to the Festival couldn\u2019t dream of a better representative for its opening than the out-of-this-world personality of the singer Anohni<\/strong> (aka Antony Hegarty, ex-frontman of Antony and the Johnsons), followed by a breath of fresh Air<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In that concert hall with its unique acoustics we will discover particularly gratifying lineups: two friends known for incisive rock, Patti Smith<\/strong> and PJ Harvey<\/strong>, who is releasing a new album\u2026tomorrow (15 April)! Sigur R\u00f3s<\/strong> will share billing with the atomic project of Mogwai<\/strong>, and the enchanting Lana Del Rey<\/strong> will present her new prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Max Jury<\/strong>. Irresistible! An evening in jazz heaven with the trio of John Scofield<\/strong>, Brad Mehldau<\/strong>, and Mark Guiliana<\/strong>, the drums genius featured on Bowie\u2019s final album, followed by John McLaughlin<\/strong>. Where else but at the Stravinski could you see Buddy Guy<\/strong> and ZZ Top<\/strong> share the stage, to satisfy the hardest core blues fans?<\/p>\n And triumphant returns: Van Morrison<\/strong>, Simply Red<\/strong>, Neil Young<\/strong>\u2019sfirst visit in 15 years, and then Jean-Michel Jarre<\/strong>, who has never before come to Montreux.<\/p>\n And of course some family affairs: Lisa Simone<\/strong> will present her new album with Jamie Cullum<\/strong> in the place where her mother, Nina, was truly imperious. \u201cUncle Nobs\u201d, as Lisa used to call him, would have been jubilant\u2026<\/p>\n An explosive wink and nod with the double presence of Deep Purple<\/strong> and Zappa<\/strong> the son performing his father\u2019s music. It was in 1971, during his father\u2019s concert, that the Casino caught fire, and the members of Deep Purple, in the audience that day, turned it into the worldwide hit \u201cSmoke on the Water\u201d. The lake, glowing from the neon lights on the promenades, will retain its starring role in the background \u2013 a landscape of ineffable beauty \u2013 all throughout the festivities.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n More close to the Festival\u2019s origins than ever, the Club is what brings together the masters of jazz and the new guard of that musical genre that informs all the others. The presence of the long-fingered magician Randy Weston<\/strong> with his African Rhythms Quintet<\/strong> is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Group after luminous group will perform, with such keen musicians as Steps Ahead<\/strong>, Volcan<\/strong>, the Chico Freeman Quintet<\/strong>, the duo of Dave Holland<\/strong> & Kenny Barron<\/strong>, the genius Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin<\/strong> and the amazing artists surrounding him, including Cheikh L\u00f4<\/strong>, Tony Allen<\/strong> and Courtney Pine<\/strong>. And let\u2019s not overlook the reunion of former the bandmates of Miles Davis: Mike Stern, Bill Evans, Darryl Jones <\/strong>and Dennis Chambers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Bir\u00e9li Lagr\u00e8ne<\/strong> first came to Montreux in 1981, and at 14 completely subjugated the audience. This worthy scion of Django will be surrounded by top-notch talent: Antonio Fara<\/strong>\u00f2<\/strong>, Gary Willis & Lenny White<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The Cuban Latin jazz scene is particularly well represented, notably by the Harold L\u00f3pez Nussa Trio<\/strong>, the Alfredo Rodriguez Trio<\/strong>, Richard Bona<\/strong> and his band the Mandekan Cubano<\/strong>, Gonzalo Rubalcaba<\/strong> with his project Volcan, and Aru\u00e1n Ortiz<\/strong> opening for Randy Weston.<\/p>\n The Genevan who conquered New York, Gr\u00e9goire Maret<\/strong>, will play the night before trumpet star Avishai Cohen<\/strong>. French-language artists are well represented, with Manu Katch\u00e9, Fran\u00e7ois Lindemann<\/strong>, and the prolific project French Jazz Quarter<\/strong> bringing together some of the top names in French music: the expat Hugh Coltman<\/strong>, with Airelle Besson, Emile Parisien, Vincent Peirani, Thomas Enhco, Thomas Bramerie <\/strong>and Anne Paceo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n You can\u2019t afford to miss the new faces of jazz: New Orleans trumpeter Christian Scott<\/strong>, with hip-hop and rock influences, singer C\u00e9cile McLorin Salvant<\/strong> and Manchester\u2019s GoGo Penguin<\/strong>. Blues by the promising Selwyn Birchwood<\/strong>, then Jack Broadbent<\/strong> opening for the legendary bluesman Robben Ford<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Finally, an intimate encounter with the scintillating voice of Keren Ann<\/strong>, with a folk gem of an opening act in the person of Montreal\u2019s unbelievably captivating Basia Bulat<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n Once again, the lineups here are painstakingly assembled. At the Lab, the programmers serve up the pleasure of discovery\u2014that\u2019s the guiding principle of this ferocious venue. Here you will find names that will get your pulse pounding: M83, Beirut, Grimes, Other Lives, Mac DeMarco, Kurt Vile<\/strong> (ex-member of The War on Drugs) & the Violators<\/strong>, not to mention the cream of thrash metal Slayer<\/strong>, with Meshuggah<\/strong>, who are not touring widely this summer. In 2016 the Lab is strongly marked by hip hop with the US duo of the moment Future<\/strong>, introduced by A$AP Ferg<\/strong>, the sensations of French rap Nekfeu<\/strong>, PNL<\/strong>, the electric Afro-trap of the new fresh prince of the 19th Arrondissement, MHD<\/strong>, and up-and-coming acts like Vald<\/strong>. Another highlight from France: a fantastic lineup with the crystalline voices of Jeanne Added<\/strong>, Lou Doillon<\/strong>, and the rock sensation Feu! Chatterton<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Electronic music is legion, and is to be consumed without limits: such masters as DJ Shadow<\/strong>, Moderat, Laurent Garnier<\/strong>, and Four Tet<\/strong> hand over to Gramatik<\/strong>, Flume<\/strong>, and Floating Points<\/strong>, and encourage the minimalist experimentations of Iceland\u2019s Kiasmos<\/strong> and France\u2019s Petit Biscuit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The established voices of Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats<\/strong> and Glen Hansard<\/strong> will echo others that are still on their way up: Ry X, <\/strong>H\u00c6LOS<\/strong>,<\/strong> Daughter<\/strong>, and the hallucinatory psych-rock of the Allah-Las<\/strong>. And two new voices, one from a faraway land, Australia\u2019s Matt Corby<\/strong>, and one from out of this world, Aurora<\/strong>, demand that you experience them. And, of course, our new soul favorite, presented live at today\u2019s press conference, England\u2019s colossal Rag\u2019n\u2019Bone Man<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n Creations are really in the spotlight this year, and the Montreux Jazz Artists Foundation<\/strong> knows how to situate them in incredibly beautiful places. Along with the tributes to Bowie and to Swiss Movement<\/em>, a third Creation will showcase Swiss pianist Nik B\u00e4rtsch<\/strong> and his project Mobile Continuum at Chillon Castle.
