\u00a0If you\u2032re travelin‘ in the north country fair, nachfolgend ein Bericht zur Reise zum Bobfest nach Oslo, einer musikalischen Hommage an Bob Dylan. \u00a0Anfang August nahm ich unter den Anzeigen auf der Dylan Site \u201eExpecting Rain\u201c das Plakat f\u00fcr diese Veranstaltung am 20.8.2023 in Oslo wahr.\u00a0 Als Tribute to Bob w\u00fcrden verschiedene K\u00fcnstler seine Songs spielen. Schnell fragte ich eine gute Freundin, ob sie mitkommen m\u00f6chte. Nach ihrem \u201eJa\u201c buchten wir Flugtickets f\u00fcr Sonnabend, Sontag und Montag nach Oslo und fanden mit dem Clarion The Hub ein gutes und zentral gelegenes Hotel. Ebenso war es kein Problem online an Tickets zu gelangen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Au\u00dfer Scarlett Rivera und Larry Campbell, die fr\u00fcher zusammen mit Dylan getourt sind, sagen mir die Namen der Auftretenden auf dem Plakat der Veranstaltung nichts. Aber das Ereignis, die Dylans Songs, waren das Ziel, nicht die auftretenden K\u00fcnstler. Das Ereignis fand im Oslo Konserthus statt, einer zentral gelegenen Music Hall f\u00fcr etwa 1.600 Zuschauer. Leider jedoch aber nicht in dem ber\u00fchmten Opernhaus am Wasser des Oslo Fjords, einem gro\u00dfen architektonischen Moment, \u00e4hnlich der Elbphilharmonie in meiner Heimatstadt Hamburg. \u00a0Dies w\u00e4re auch wirklich zu sch\u00f6n gewesen. Dylan verf\u00fcgt so wie in England auch in Skandinavien \u00fcber eine besonders gro\u00dfe Fangemeinde und nordische Wissenschaftler haben Bob Dylan immer wieder f\u00fcr den Nobelpreis in Literatur vorgeschlagen, bis er dann im Herbst 2016 diese Auszeichnung schlie\u00dflich erhielt.\u00a0 Daher ist es sicherlich kein Zufall, dass eine derartige Veranstaltung dort eine gro\u00dfe Halle mit Zuschauern f\u00fcllt.<\/p>\n

Blicke ich in den Spiegel, sehe ich einen alten Mann und Dylan-Veteran, ich geh\u00f6re zur Generation Dylan, die am Aussterben ist. Ich liebe seine Songs und seine Worte, seitdem ich sechzehn wurde. Seine Musik und er sind zu einem Teil meines Lebens geworden. So habe ich seit 1978 etwa 60 plus Shows gesehen, z B. in London, New York, Milano, P\u00e9tange oder Lule\u00e5 am Polarkreis. \u00a0Auch habe ich mir einen Traum erf\u00fcllt und mit \u201eLooking for Bob Dylan Vol. 1\u201c ein Buch \u00fcber ihn geschrieben. Da ich in den sp\u00e4ten Sechzigern erwachsen wurde, finde ich als Forschungsgegenstand die Verbindung zwischen Kultur, Bob Dylan’s Kunst und Zeitgeschichte besonders interessant. In meinenAugen leistete sie einen gro\u00dfen Beitrag zu \u00a0den gesellschaftlichen Ver\u00e4nderungen dieses Jahrzehnts nach den verkrusteten 1950ern. Meine Begleitung hat eine Dylan Show gesehen, zusammen mit mir am 7.10.2023 in Berlin. Es gefiel ihr sehr.<\/p>\n

Die wenigen Tage bis zum Reisebeginn vergingen mit Vorfreude, doch unser Hinflug am Sonnabend verlief leider ziemlich ungl\u00fccklich. Urspr\u00fcnglich sollten wir nach einem Umsteigen in Stockholm, Schweden um 14 Uhr in Oslo landen, doch die Maschine aus Hamburg hatte erst Versp\u00e4tung, dann funktionierte die Technik lange nicht. So mussten wir am Flughafen Stockholm mehr als 5 Stunden ungl\u00fccklich herumsitzen und waren erst abends gegen 21 Uhr im Hotel in Oslo. \u00a0Selbstverst\u00e4ndlich \u00e4rgerten wir uns \u00fcber den verlorenen Tag am Zielort. Auch die nun f\u00e4llige EU-Kompensation ist daf\u00fcr nur ein schwacher Trost.<\/p>\n

Am Sonntag hatten wir vormittags Regenwetter, gingen aber an der Akershus Festung vorbei zum Aker Brygge Hafenbecken und fuhren mit einer F\u00e4hre auf eine der kleinen Inseln, die vor der Stadt liegen. Ein wundersch\u00f6ner Ausflug, der trotz Regen viel Spa\u00df gebracht hat. Abends dann ging es gutgelaunt zum Bobfest, dem Anlass unserer Reise.<\/p>\n

Die Halle war mit etwa 1. 000 Zuschauern gut gef\u00fcllt und p\u00fcnktlich begann die Show. Am linken Rand der B\u00fchne betrat ein\u00a0Conferencier die B\u00fchne. Er begr\u00fc\u00dfte die Anwesenden und erz\u00e4hlte ein wenig \u00fcber Bob Dylan und seinen Weg. Leider auf norwegisch, f\u00fcr uns also unverst\u00e4ndlich. Am Ende seiner kurzen Ausf\u00fchrungen k\u00fcndigte er jeweils die n\u00e4chsten K\u00fcnstler und zwei Songs an, dann wieder der Conferencier und so weiter. Die ersten Songs waren in norwegischer \u00dcbersetzung, so dass wir anfangs etwas fremdelten. Danach wurde es f\u00fcr uns ein sch\u00f6ner Abend, als die Musikst\u00fccke in den englischsprachigen Originalversionen gebracht wurden. Eine tolle Band, The Salmon smokers, begleitete die K\u00fcnstler durch den Abend.<\/p>\n

F\u00fcr mich waren die Highlights des Abends: Time passes slowly, Not dark yet, Romance in Durango, Changing of the guards, Boots of Spanish leather. Am Ende der Show sangen alle zusammen I shall be released, als Hommage in Analogie zum 1976 Abschieds-Konzert der (Bob Dylan Begleitband) The Band. \u00a0Verewigt als Film von Martin Scorsese mit dem Titel \u201cThe Last Waltz\u201c. Und vielleicht war dieser Song als Finale des Abends auch eine Verbeugung vor dem k\u00fcrzlich verstorbenen Robbie Robertson. Inklusive einer kurzen Pause dauerte die Show \u00fcber drei Stunden.<\/p>\n

F\u00fcf uns war es ein begeisterndes Ereignis, auch vor dem Hintergrund, dass keiner wei\u00df, ob und wie lange man Bob Dylan himself \u201elive and in person\u201c altersbedingt noch erleben kann. It’s not dark yet, but it’s gettin‘ there. Ob Bob noch einmal in Europa auftritt? Am Montag kam die Sonne zu einem wundersch\u00f6nen warmen Sommertag heraus. Wir bummelten durch die friedliche Stadt, die so anders ist als mein problembehaftetes Heimatland, und sa\u00dfen am Wasser am Opernhaus, dann ging es abends \u00fcber Kopenhagen zur\u00fcck nach Hamburg.<\/p>\n

F\u00fcr uns beide war es eine sch\u00f6ne Reise und ein toller Abend: Jederzeit wieder w\u00fcrde ich zu einem Bobfest reisen. Bobs Musik und seine Lyrik sind seit Jahrzehnten f\u00fcr mich wie ein Bruder, den ich regelm\u00e4\u00dfig besuche. Am Ende nun einige Fotografische Eindr\u00fccke.<\/p>\n

If you\u2032re travelin‘ in the north country fair, the following is a report about my trip to the Bobfest in Oslo, a musical tribute to Bob Dylan in august 2023.\u00a0 At the beginning of august 2023 noticed among the advertisements on the Dylan site „Expecting Rain“ the poster for that event in Norway.\u00a0 Various artists would be playing Dylan songs. Quickly I asked a good friend if she would like to come along. After her saying „yes“ we booked flight tickets for Saturday, Sunday and Monday in Oslo and found a good and centrally located hotel, Clarion The hub. There was also no problem to buy tickets online.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Apart from Scarlett Rivera and Larry Campbell, who used to tour with Dylan, the names of the performers on the event poster mean nothing to me. But the event and Dylan’s songs were enough reason for this trip, not the performing artists. The Bobfest took place at the Oslo Konserthus, a centrally located music hall for about 1,600 people. Unfortunately, however, not in the famous opera house on the waterfront of the Oslo Fjord, a truely great architectural moment, similar magnificent to the Elbphilharmonie in my home town of Hamburg. That would really have been too beautiful.<\/em><\/p>\n

Dylan has a particularly large fan base in Scandinavia, just as he does in England, and Nordic scholars repeatedly nominated him for the Nobel Prize in Literature, until he finally received this award in autumn 2016. Therefor it seems not surprising that a Bobfest in Scandinavia fills a large location with spectators.<\/em><\/p>\n

If I look into a mirror I am an old man by now, a Dylan veteran, belonging to the Dylan generation. I have loved his songs and his words since I was sixteen. His music and his persona have become a part of my life. From 1978 until today I have attended about 60 plus of his shows, for example in London, New York, Milano or Lulea. I also fulfilled a dream and wrote a book about him, Looking for Bob Dylan Vol. 1. Coming of age in the late sixties, I find the connection between culture, Bob Dylan’s art, and contemporary history particularly interesting as a research subject. My companion has seen one Dylan show so far, together with me on 7.10.2022 in Berlin. She liked it much.<\/em><\/p>\n

The few days until the start of the trip passed with anticipation, but our outward flight on Saturday happened to be rather unfortunate. Originally, we were supposed to land in Oslo at 2 p.m. after changing planes in Stockholm, Sweden, but the plane from Hamburg was first delayed, then broke down several times. Finally, we had to sit around unhappily for more than 5 hours at Stockholm airport and we didn’t get to our hotel in Oslo until around 9pm in the evening.\u00a0 Of course, we were annoyed about the loss of nearly a day at our destination. Even the EU compensation now due is little consolation for this.<\/em><\/p>\n

On Sunday we had rainy weather in the morning, but walked past the Akershus Fortress to the Aker Brygge harbour and took a ferry to one of the small islands lying in front of the city. Beautiful nature. Despite the rain, it was a lot of fun. In the evening then we went in good spirits to the Bobfest, the reason of our trip.<\/em><\/p>\n

The hall was well filled with about 1,000 spectators and the show began on time. At the left edge of the stage, a conferencier entered the stage and welcomed the audience. Then he told about Bob Dylan, his life and career. Unfortunately he spoke in Norwegian language, so incomprehensible for us. At the end of his short talk, he announced the first artists with two songs. Then the conferencier again, storytelling about Dylan and announcing the next songs, and so on. The first songs were in Norwegian language, so that we were a little bit unhappy at the beginning. After that, it became an awesome evening for us when the songs were brought in the original English versions. A great band, the Salmon Smokers, accompanied the artists through the evening.<\/em><\/p>\n

In my opinion \u00a0the highlights of the evening were: Time passes slowly, Not dark yet, Romance in Durango, Changing of the guards, Boots of Spanish leather. At the end of the show, everyone sang I shall be released together, as a tribute in analogy to the 1976 farewell concert of (Bob Dylan’s backing band) The Band.\u00a0 Immortalised in a movie by Martin Scorsese entitled „The Last Waltz“. And perhaps this song also was a nod to the recently deceased Robbie Robertson. Including a short break, the show lasted more than three hours. At midnight we were back at the hotel.<\/em><\/p>\n

It was an absolute inspiring event, also in view of the fact that no one knows whether and for how long one can still experience Bob Dylan himself „live and in person“ due to his age. Will Bob perform in Europe again? It’s not dark yet, but definitely it’s gettin‘ there. On Monday, the bright Nordic sun came out for a beautiful warm summer day. We strolled through the peaceful city, which is so different from my problem-ridden homeland, and sat by the water at the opera house. Then in the evening a plane took us back to Hamburg via Copenhagen.<\/em><\/p>\n

For both of us it was a beautiful trip and a great Bob Dylan evening: I would travel to a Bobfest again any time. Bob’s music and his lyrics have been like a brother to me for decades.<\/em><\/p>\n
