Auf Gutenberg wird Patti Smith sp\u00e4ter bei ihrem Deutschlandtourauftakt in der Mainzer Zitadelle noch eingehen. \u201eErfinderin\u201c ist die am 30. Dezember 1946 geborene Singer\/ Songwriterin, Schriftstellerin und Rockpoetin schlie\u00dflich auch. \u201eErfinderin\u201c von Worten. Aber vor allem ist sie mit knapp 79 Jahren noch immer die \u201eGodmother of Punk-Rock\u201c. \u201ePoetin des Punkrock\u201c nannte sie einmal DER SPIEGEL. \u201eRock-Diva\u201c die NZZ und \u201eSeelenverf\u00fchrerin\u201c die FAZ. Vielleicht aber hat R.E.M. Frontmann Michael Stipe die viel bessere Beschreibung f\u00fcr Patti Smith parat, wenn er sie einfach nur \u201eQueen Of Cool\u201c nennt. Die \u201eMeisterin der Anbetung und der Anverwandlung\u201c (TAGESSPIEGEL) und \u201eeinzigartige Mystikerin\u201c (FAZ) wei\u00df jedenfalls noch immer mit einer \u201echarismatische B\u00fchnenpr\u00e4senz&#8220; (ROLLING STONE) zu bestehen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Am Dienstag, dem 1. Juli er\u00f6ffnet Patti Smith bei 38 Grad Celsius ihre Open Air- bzw. Zeltfestival-Tournee in der fast ausverkauften Zitadelle vor knapp 3000 Zuschauer.<\/p>\n<p>Neun Konzerte (oder einfach \u201eJobs\u201c, wie die Arbeitertochter ihre Shows gerne bezeichnet) wird sie mit dem \u201ePatti Smith Quartett\u201c, ihre derzeit reduzierte Begleitband hierzulande im Juli 2025 spielen.<\/p>\n<p>Kaum eine K\u00fcnstlerin ist derart vollendet in der Lage, B\u00fchnen mit ungeheurer Pr\u00e4senz zum Leuchten zu bringen, wie Patti Smith. Grosse B\u00fchnenlichtshows und Bildleinw\u00e4nde ben\u00f6tigt sie hierf\u00fcr nicht. Die gibt es nicht. Die B\u00fchne wirkt quasi spartanisch und nur mit Instrumenten und etwas Licht ausgestattet. Die Smith mag es puristisch. Die Smith mag es mit wenigen Akkorden, bet\u00f6rendem Sprechgesang und ausufernder H\u00e4ndegestik zu beeindrucken und nicht mit Dingen, die von dem ablenken, was ihr wichtig ist: Texte. Mit der W\u00fcrde einer ergrauten Punk-Schamanin ist sie vielleicht ein wenig weniger energiegeladener und zur\u00fcckhaltender in ihren Bewegungen als in ihrer Jugend, nicht aber ausdruckloser. \u201eIf you go on stage, you have to put yourself on risk\u201d, hat Leonard Cohen einmal gesagt, und es gibt wohl kaum eine K\u00fcnstlerin, die diese Forderung so perfekt verk\u00f6rpert wie Patti Smith: Ihre Konzerte sind einmalige Performances, ohne Netz und doppelten Boden, ganz im Hier und Jetzt und eins mit ihrem Publikum. 50 Jahre ist es her, dass Patti Smith mit dem legend\u00e4ren \u201eHorses\u201c-Album deb\u00fctierte. Vor zehn Jahren stellte sie das komplette Album noch einmal live in ihren Shows vor. Zehn Jahre sp\u00e4ter bietet sie in Mainz ihrem Publikum einen Einblick in ihre mittlerweile 50 Jahre anhaltende Karriere als Album-K\u00fcnstlerin. Vom \u201eHorses\u201c-Album (1975) stellt sie nur \u201eRedondo Beach\u201c vor, der als Opener ausgew\u00e4hlt ist. Erst bei anderen europ\u00e4ischen Konzerten soll es mehr vom \u201eHorses\u201c-Album geben, hei\u00dft es. Dann sollen auch Gitarrist Lenny Kaye und Schlagzeuger Jay Dee Daugherty mit dabei sein, die damals bei \u201eHorses\u201c mitgewirkt haben. Geburtstags des Dalai Lama. Die 3000 h\u00f6ren der \u201eGrande Dame der Rockmusik\u201c and\u00e4chtig zu. Mutig, das vor 3000 gleich zu Beginn eines Konzertes mit Erwartungshaltungs-Charakter bei sommerlicher Hitze zu tun. F\u00fcr eine Patti Smith ist es business as usual, mit der Kraft der Worte zu \u00fcberzeugen, wenn es darum, geht sich in ihren Texten f\u00fcr Unterdr\u00fcckte, Vernachl\u00e4ssigte und Vergessene einzusetzen. Nach dem Steve Earle-Cover \u201eTranscendental Blues\u201c begibt sich die Smith an den B\u00fchnenrand, um angesichts der Hitze zu verschnaufen. Ihre Band mit Sohn Jackson an der Leadgitarre, Keyboarder, Gitarrist, Bassist und Zweitstimme Tony Shanahan und Schlagzeuger Seb Rochford improvisieren spontan Sly Stones \u201eEveryday People\u201c. Das Publikum hat mehr als Verst\u00e4ndnis, sogar Anerkennung f\u00fcr die kleine Schw\u00e4che, die mehr als St\u00e4rke zeigt. H\u00f6hepunkt des knapp \u00fcber 90 Minuten langen Konzertes sind \u201eMan In The Long Black Coat\u201c von Bob Dylan, \u201ePissing in a River\u201c der \u201ePatti Smith Group\u201c und nat\u00fcrlich das zusammen mit Bruce Springsteen geschriebene \u201eBecause The Night\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>Am Anfang noch mit Brille und schwarzem Blazer das Konzert beginnend, bei zwei Songs zur Gitarre greifend und schnell Blazer und Brille ablegend, ist Patti Smith bei vielen Songs vom frenetisch jubelnden Mainzer Publikum ger\u00fchrt. Leidenschaft, Hingabe und \u00dcberzeugung f\u00fcr das einzustehen, was sie singt und sagt, verk\u00f6rpert die Frau, die schon immer auf das Innere mehr Wert legte. Wenn Sie zur Gitarre greift, post sie wie eine Rockerin, wenn sie ins Mikrofon schreit oder auch mal auf den B\u00fchnenboden spuckt, wirkt sie wie eine Punkerin, immer aber ist sie authentische Liedermacherin, deren Aura man sich nicht entziehen kann. Zwischen den Songs erz\u00e4hlt sie kleine Anekdoten, wie z.B. dass sie Gutenberg als der wichtigste Mann in den Medien ansieht, weil er den Buchdruck erfunden hat. Sie erz\u00e4hlt von ihren literarischen Einfl\u00fcssen wie Burroughs, Gainsbourg und Blake und erinnert daran, jedes tote Kind eines zu viel sei, wenn sie \u00fcber die Unn\u00f6tigkeit von Kriegen spricht. Johannes Gutenberg habe in ihrem M\u00e4dchenzimmer an ihrer \u201eWall of Heroes\u201c neben Johanna von Orleans, Alice im Wunderland und William Blake gehangen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201eBecause the Night\u201c, der (vor-)letzte Song widmet sie ihrem 1994 verstorbenen Ehemann Fred \u201eSonic\u201c Smith, Vater von Gitarrist Jackson und verabschiedet sich in die noch immer hei\u00dfe Nacht des Mainzer \u201eSummer In The City\u201c-Festivals. Am Ende bleibt als Zugabe nur noch ein weiteres Mal in Erinnerung zu rufen: \u201ePeople Have The Power\u201c und dass man nicht vergessen sollte, bei den Temperaturen viel Wasser zu trinken. Patti Smith will talk about Gutenberg later at her German tour kick-off in the Mainz Citadel. After all, the singer\/songwriter, writer and rock poet, born on December 30, 1946, is also the &#8222;inventor&#8220;. &#8222;Inventor&#8220; of words. But above all, at almost 79 years old, she is still the &#8222;Godmother of Punk Rock&#8220;. &#8222;Poet of punk rock&#8220; is what DER SPIEGEL once called her. &#8222;Rock diva&#8220; the NZZ and &#8222;soul seductress&#8220; the FAZ. In any case, the &#8222;master of worship and transformation&#8220; (TAGESSPIEGEL) and &#8222;unique mystic&#8220; (FAZ) still knows how to hold her own with a &#8222;charismatic stage presence&#8220; (ROLLING STONE).<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><strong>On Tuesday, July 1, Patti Smith will open her open-air or tent festival tour at 38 degrees Celsius in the almost sold-out citadel in front of almost 3000 spectators.<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><strong>She will play nine concerts (or simply &#8222;jobs&#8220;, as the working-class daughter likes to call her shows) with the &#8222;Patti Smith Quartet&#8220;, her currently reduced backing band in this country, in July 2025.<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><strong>Hardly any other artist is so perfectly able to make stages shine with tremendous presence as Patti Smith. She does not need large stage light shows and screens for this. There is no such thing. The stage looks quasi spartan and is only equipped with instruments and some light. Smith likes it puristic. Smith likes to impress with a few chords, beguiling speech singing and sprawling hand gestures and not with things that distract from what is important to her: lyrics. With the dignity of a graying punk shaman, she is perhaps a little less energetic and restrained in her movements than in her youth, but not more expressionless. &#8222;If you go on stage, you have to put yourself on risk,&#8220; Leonard Cohen once said, and there is hardly an artist who embodies this demand as perfectly as Patti Smith: Her concerts are unique performances, without a safety net or double bottom, completely in the here and now and one with her audience. It&#8217;s been 50 years since Patti Smith debuted with the legendary &#8222;Horses&#8220; album. Ten years ago, she presented the complete album live again in her shows. Ten years later, she offers her audience in Mainz an insight into her 50-year career as an album artist. From the &#8222;Horses&#8220; album (1975) she only presents &#8222;Redondo Beach&#8220;, which is chosen as the opener. Only at other European concerts will there be more of the &#8222;Horses&#8220; album, it is said. Guitarist Lenny Kaye and drummer Jay Dee Daugherty, who were involved in &#8222;Horses&#8220; at the time, will also be there. Courageous to do this in front of 3000 people right at the beginning of a concert with expectation character in the summer heat. For Patti Smith, it is business as usual to convince with the power of words when it comes to standing up for the oppressed, neglected and forgotten in her lyrics. After the Steve Earle cover &#8222;Transcendental Blues&#8220;, Smith goes to the edge of the stage to catch her breath in the face of the heat. Her band with son Jackson on lead guitar, keyboardist, guitarist, bassist and second vocalist Tony Shanahan and drummer Seb Rochford spontaneously improvise Sly Stone&#8217;s &#8222;Everyday People&#8220;. The audience has more than understanding, even recognition, for the small weakness that shows more than strength. The highlight of the concert, which lasts just over 90 minutes, is &#8222;Man In The Long Black Coat&#8220; by Bob Dylan, &#8222;Pissing in a River&#8220; by the &#8222;Patti Smith Group&#8220; and, of course, &#8222;Because The Night&#8220;, written together with Bruce Springsteen.<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><strong>At the beginning still with glasses and a black blazer, grabbing the guitar for two songs and quickly taking off her blazer and glasses, Patti Smith is touched by the frenetically cheering Mainz audience during many songs. Passion, dedication and conviction to stand up for what she sings and says embodies the woman who has always attached more importance to the inside. When she picks up the guitar, she posts like a rocker, when she screams into the microphone or sometimes spits on the stage floor, she seems like a punk, but she is always an authentic singer-songwriter whose aura you can&#8217;t escape. Between the songs, she tells little anecdotes, such as that she sees Gutenberg as the most important man in the media because he invented the printing press. She talks about her literary influences such as Burroughs, Gainsbourg and Blake and reminds us that every dead child is one too many when she talks about the unnecessity of wars. Johannes Gutenberg hung in her girl&#8217;s room on her &#8222;Wall of Heroes&#8220; next to Joan of Arc, Alice in Wonderland and William Blake, she tells us.<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><strong>She dedicates &#8222;Because the Night&#8220;, the (penal) last song, to her husband Fred &#8222;Sonic&#8220; Smith, father of guitarist Jackson, who died in 1994, and says goodbye to the still hot night of the Mainz &#8222;Summer In The City&#8220; festival. At the end, there is only one more thing left to remember as an encore: &#8222;People Have The Power&#8220; and that you shouldn&#8217;t forget to drink a lot of water in these temperatures.
