With a musical career that spanned nearly five decades, Cohen has been hailed by critics and fellow musicians alike as one of the most iconic artists of the 20<\/span>th<\/span> century. A poet in his early career, the native <\/span>Montr<\/span>\u00e9<\/span>aler<\/span> released his first of 14 studio albums, <\/span>Songs of Leonard Cohen<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>in 1967 at the age of 33<\/span>. His signature gravelly baritone, married with the succinctness of his sage, bohemian language, quickly identified him as a master lyricist. <\/span><\/p>\n

Widely admired, his new and old masterpieces include timeless and enigmatic hits such as \u201cSuzanne\u201d, \u201cBird on the Wire\u201d, \u201cEverybody Knows\u201d, \u201cFirst <\/span>W<\/span>e Take Manhattan\u201d, \u201cClosing Time\u201d, and \u201cHallelujah\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n

More than 2,000 recordings of <\/span>Leonard Cohen\u2019s<\/span> <\/span>songs have been made by artists that range from Elton John, U2, Jeff Buckley, <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>Aretha Franklin. And from Bob Dylan to Justin Timberlake, <\/span>more than<\/span> <\/span>200 artists have sung or recorded the now iconic \u201cHallelujah<\/span>\u201d since Cohen\u2019s original recording in 1984<\/span>, <\/span>including breathtaking performances by <\/span>k.d<\/span>. <\/span>lang<\/span> at <\/span>THE 2005 JUNO AWARDS <\/span>in Winnipeg, and<\/span> the<\/span> Opening Ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics Games. <\/span><\/p>\n

A Companion of the Order of Canada, Cohen was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, the U<\/span>.<\/span>S<\/span>.<\/span> Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Folk Music Walk of Fame. In addition to his six <\/span>JUNO <\/span>Awards, and numerous other <\/span>honours<\/span> across his prolific career, Cohen was also awarded the Glenn Gould Prize, <\/span>the Principe de Asturias Prize, a PEN New England\/Lyrics Award,<\/span> <\/span>as well as <\/span>a Lifetime Achievement Award<\/span> at The Grammys<\/span>.
