Die 52. Ausgabe des Montreux Jazz Festival wird heute eröffnet. Bis zum 14. Juli können die Festivalbesucher zwischen den 380 Konzerten, von denen 250 kostenlos sind, nach Belieben ihre eigene Reise gestalten. Als neuer Schauplatz dieser Ausgabe offenbart das House of Jazz mit dem ersten Bal de la Coupole ab der Eröffnungsnacht seinen beflügelnden Groove.

Die Fähigkeit, an mehreren Orten gleichzeitig zu sein? Davon kann man im Hinblick auf die Programmdichte dieser 52. Ausgabe nur träumen. Das Festival lädt das Publikum dazu ein, seine eigene Reise zu den vielen Bühnen ab Heute zu gestalten. Der Weg einer festlichen Eröffnungsreise, die reich an Neuheiten ist und den Geist des Festivals in sich vereint.

Leonard Cohen only toured three times during the 1980s; in the decade s opening year he performed a couple of shows each in Australia and the US, plus a handful of dates in Europe. In 1985 he followed a near identical itinerary, while 1998 was witness to a more extended European jaunt, plus a few dates in North America. The show featured on this DVD comes from a TV broadcast of Cohen s gig in San Sebastian, Spain, on 20th May 1988, one of five performances he gave in the country in as many days. Touring in support of his I m Your Man album, this delightful appearance in the Basque region, released here on DVD for the first time, features a superb array of Cohen classics and a fine selection of tunes from his then current record.

Leonard Cohen received The Montreal International Jazz Festival’s third Spirit Award on 26th of Juin 2008 . Head of the Festival, Andre Menard, comes on stage to present award to Adam Cohen as a representative of his father.

Einen Tag nach Leonard Cohens Auftritten beim MONTREAL JAZZ FESTIVAL 2008 gab es am 26. Juni 2008 auf dem Montrealer Place Des Arts ein Konzert von Katie Melua. Die coverte einst auf deren damaligen aktuellen Album (Pictures, 2007) den Song „In My Secret Life“. Nach deren Auftritt gab es ein von Adam Cohen gehostetes HOMMAGE TO LEONARD COHEN-KONZERT mit zahlreichern Künstlern, die Cohens Lieder coverten.

Etwa 50.000 Menschen versammelten sich auf dem Place des Arts in Montreal/ Quebec zu dem als „Free Concert“ deklarierten Event, bei dem Cohen selbst nicht auftrat, wohl aber mit Video-Einspielungen seines Auftrittes einige Tage zuvor (23. Juni 2008), partizipierte. Leonard Cohen erhielt den  „The Montreal International Jazz Festival Spirit Award“ zum dritten Mal. Sein Sohn Adam Cohen, der ebenfalls Lieder seines Vaters solo und auch mit anderen Künstlern vortrug und für die Realisation dieses Tribute-Events verantwortlich zeichnete, nahm den Award entgegen.
