Walking Montreal`s Streets – Looking for Cohen Places – Vol. 5

The Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours chapel is one of the oldest churches in the city. It is around five kilometers east of Mile End in the “old harbor” of Montreal. In the 19th century, the chapel became a site of pilgrimage for sailors that arrived at the old harbor – that’s where the nickname “Sailor’s Church” came from. The church was immortalized by Leonard Cohen in his song “Suzanne,” on the 1967 debut-album “Songs of Leonard Cohen.” The line “And the sun pours down like honey on our lady of the harbor,” references the statute on the tower of the church, which faces the Saint-Lawrence River.     More about that in my bilingual blog ( www.cohenpedia.de) and on my google map.
