Théâtre Saint-Denis is a theatre located on Saint Denis Street in Montreal, Quebec, in the city’s Quartier Latin. The Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours chapel is one of the oldest churches in the city. It is around five kilometers east of Mile End in the “old harbor” of Montreal. In the 19th century, the chapel became a site of pilgrimage for sailors that arrived at the old harbor – that’s where the nickname “Sailor’s Church” came from. The church was immortalized by Leonard Cohen in his song “Suzanne,” on the 1967 debut-album “Songs of Leonard Cohen.” The line “And the sun pours down like honey on our lady of the harbor,” references the statute on the tower of the church, which faces the Saint-Lawrence River. More about that in my bilingual blog ( www.cohenpedia.de) and on my google map.
If you stand at “1420 Crescent Street” facing the Leonard Cohen [mural] and turn 180 degrees, you are looking directly at the Erskine and American United Church, located at the corner of Rue Sherbrooke Ouest and Rue Crescent. The street and the church served as the backdrop for the cover photo of Leonard Cohen’s 2001 album, „Field Commander Cohen: Tour Of 1979”, photographed by Hazel Field, neighbourhood friend and Montreal photographer.More about that in my bilingual blog ( www.cohenpedia.de) and on my google map. From the „View“ to the “ 1420 Crescent Street“ downtown, where you can find the „Leonard Cohen-Mural“, based on a photograph by Leonard Cohen`s daughter Lorca Cohen. It was inaugurated in time for the first anniversary of Cohen’s death 2017. It was created by a group of artists with the MU collective, specifically El Mac and Gene Pendon.
