KW-10-2018: Leonard Cohen und … Rock`n`Roll Hall Of Fame. 10 years ago Induction – Heute am 10. März vor zehn Jahren wurde Leonard Cohen in die „Rock`n`Roll Hall Of Fame“ aufgenommen.

RockʼnʼRoll Hall Of Fame à ist ein Museum in Cleveland, Ohio für die wichtigsten und einflussreichsten Musiker, Produzenten und Persönlichkeiten im Umfeld des RockʼnʼRoll. Seit 1986 wird jedes Jahr eine begrenzte Anzahl neuer Mitglieder aufgenommen. Cohen wurde am 10. März 2008 in die Hall Of Fame aufgenommen. à Lou Reed hielt die Laudatio. Das mediale Umfeld der Feierlichkeiten anlässlich der „Induction Into The 2008 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame“ nutzte Cohens neues Management, um dessen erste Welttournee seit 15 Jahren anzukündigen.

THE 2008 ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME

 Ladies and Gentlemen, to induct Leonard Cohen into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, please welcome, Lou Reed: 

You know I first met Mr. Leonard Cohen at the Chelsea Hotel and at a place called Max’s. Outside the Chelsea we were talking and he said-which I thought was really sweet-he said you wrote a song called „I’ll Be Your Mirror“ and it made me want to continue being a songwriter. Then we were sitting at Max’s Kansas City. In the back room there you had to know somebody. So people weren’t paying attention to Leonard. I said, this is Leonard Cohen, he wrote Beautiful Losers. So speaking of Beautiful Losers, which I never got a chance to tell Leonard this, and I was in the part of the tour „I’m Your Man“ that wasn’t filmed, so nobody got to see me except in Dublin, unless you flew there. You get to really appreciate someone’s songs when you sing them, when you sing them out loud. That’s when you can really hear it, but anyway. Beautiful Losers, Naked Lunch, I started thinking, Burroughs, Leonard, Allen Ginsberg, (those three), Hubert Selby, (maybe four), but Naked Lunch and Beautiful Losers were out more or less kind of the same time, but one got a lot more attention. I was always very surprised by that. We are so lucky to be alive at the same time Leonard Cohen is. Ladies and gentleman I very much want to welcome Leonard Cohen.

 

The Leonard Cohen Acceptance Speech:

 Oh thank you so much friends, and Lou thank you so much for reminding me that I wrote a couple of good lines. I inducted you into my own ghostly hall of fame many many years ago. You flourished there from then until this very day. Thank you so much. This is a very unlikely occassion for me. It is not a distinction that I coveted or even to dare dream about. So I am reminded of the prophetic statement of Jon Landau in the early ’70s. He said, „I have seen the future of Rock and Roll and it is not Leonard Cohen.“ So very pleased to be here. Such an unlikely event. To stand here among the inductees tonight is a great privilege and a great honor. Thank you friends.

Leonard Cohen – Live At Austin City Limits/ Texas

I.Introduction

Austin City Limits (ACL) ist ein amerikanisches öffentliches Fernsehmusikprogramm, das live in Austin, Texas, vom Fernsehsender KLRU des öffentlichen Rundfunks (PBS) aufgezeichnet und auf vielen PBS-Sendern in den Vereinigten Staaten ausgestrahlt wird. Die Show wurde 1974 von Bill Arhos gegründet, der 2015 im Alter von 80 Jahren starb.

Die Show half Austin weithin bekannt als „Live Music Capital of the World“ zu werden. In den Jahren 1976-87 wurde Austin City Limits vom Southwest Texas Public Broadcasting Council produziert. Ab der 13. Saison (1988) zog Austin City Limits zu seinem derzeitigen Produktionsstandort in Austins PBS-Tochter KLRU, der Hauptstadt des Texas Public Telecommunications Council.

Ursprünglich wurde die Show gegründet, um die Musik von Texas zu feiern – mit Western-Swing, Texas-Blues, Tejano-Musik, Progressive Country und Rock’n’Roll. Mit der in Serie gegangenen Sendung „Austin City Limits“ wurden regionale, nationale und internationale Künstler vorgestellt, aus den Genres Jazz, Alternativland, Alternative Rock, Folk und Jam Band präsentiert. Ab der 10. Saison (1985) begann Austin City Limits, außerhalb des Studios Performances aufzunehmen

 

II.Austin City Limits (1974-Today) – Willie Nelson made the first Austin City Limit-Concert in 1974

Willie Nelson war der erste, der am 17. Oktober 1974 zu Gast war.

Die Show inspirierte das Austin City Limits Music Festival, ein jährliches Live-Musik-Festival im Zilker Park in Austin. 1982 kehrte Bill Arhos als ausführender Produzent zu Austin City Limits zurück. Einige der Auftritte von Austin City Limits wurden als CDs und DVDs in der Serie „Live from Austin, TX“ veröffentlicht. Am 21. Juni 2012 gab die Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame und das Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, bekannt, dass fast 40 Jahre Austin City Limits Filmmaterial „für immer“ in der neuen Bibliothek und dem Archiv des Museums digital archiviert werden wird; Aufnahmen von mehr als 800 Live-Aufführungen werden der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. Darunter auch Leonard Cohens Auftritt 1988.

In den ersten 36 Saisons wurde Austin City Limits in seinem ursprünglichen Zuhause im Studio 6A im Kommunikationsgebäude B der University of Texas auf dem Campus von Austin auf einer Bühne mit einer Schein-Skyline von Austin im Hintergrund aufgenommen. Im Jahr 2010 wurden die Show und ihr Originalstudio in die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame aufgenommen.

 

III. Leonard Cohen – Live at Austin City Limits (1988, 1993)

Leonard Cohens Auftritt in der Episode von Austin City Limits am 31. Oktober 1988, bezeichnete er in der Sendung selbst als seine “first major performance on American television.“ Aufgrund der Tatsache, daß die Sendung im TV ausgestrahlt wurde, war sie schnell ein „Opfer“ für Bootlegger für CDs und DVDs. Auch auf YOUTUBE war die Sendung lange zu sehen. Durch Urheberrechtsbeschränkungen wurde sie zeitweise von YOUTUBE gebommen, mittlerweile ist sie wieder zu sehen, ebenso auf der offiziellen Seite von AustinCityLimits-TV.

Aufgenommen in der Halloween-Nacht 1988 und ausgestrahlt 1989, war Cohens einstündige Episode, eine für die Ewigkeit. Eine Performance voller Ausdrucksstärke und eine, die zu einer der beliebtesten und gefragtesten Shows geworden ist.

„Leonard war ACL nicht sehr bewusst, bis seine Austin-Freunde und -Kohorten ihn dazu überredeten, die Show zu machen“, sagte Executive Producer Terry Lickona. „Die Band spielte am Abend zuvor eine Late Show in L.A. und kam recht übermüdet in Austin aber dennoch pünktlich zur Probe an. Sie trugen alle die gleiche Kleidung. Ähnlich wie bei der 2008-2013er Konzertreise war Cohen auch 1988 bei öffentlichen Auftritten stets gleich gekleidet. Srin einziges damaliges Anliegen war eine Flaschehe Tequila, auf die die Band leicht verzichten konnte. Die Show kam beim Publikum sehr gut aus. Später erzählte Cohen, daß ihn die Ausstrahlung quasi in Amerika gerettet‘ hatte, und ihn in das Gedächtnis aller wieder zurückgerufen hätte, zu einem Zeitpunkt als er fast vergessen war. “

1993 kehrte Cohen kehrte zurück nach Austin, um sein Album „The Future“ zu präsentieren. Zwei der dort präsentierten Songs, erschienen später auf der 1994er Album „Cohen Live“.
