We are honoured to welcome writer and broadcaster John MacKenna to Mulranny Arts this November for How the Light Gets In — a five day immersive retreat dedicated to the life, music and poetry of Leonard Cohen.
Set between sea and mountains on Ireland’s west coast from 4–9 November 2026, this unique gathering invites participants to slow down, listen deeply and reconnect with the spirit of Leonard Cohen’s work. Drawing on his decades-long friendship with Cohen, John MacKenna offers rare and personal insight into the artist’s creative world. Through guided listening, conversation, creative exploration and reflection, participants will step gently into the themes that shaped Cohen’s writing: love, longing, spirituality, humour, heartbreak and hope.
Guests will stay in comfortable accommodation at Mulranny Arts, with nourishing meals prepared on site and time to walk by the sea, experience the Great Western Greenway and connect with like-minded people in an inspiring setting. The retreat also includes a special evening performance celebrating Cohen’s words and music.
Whether you have followed Leonard Cohen’s work for decades or feel newly drawn to his songs and poetry, this retreat offers a rare opportunity for connection, inspiration and creative renewal.
