KW-45-2026: KW-45-2026: Walking Montreal`s Streets – Looking for Cohen Places – von Christof Graf – Vol. 15 : The Bagels Shop, nearby Leonard C ohen`s Neighbourhood in Parc Du Portugal Area

20 minutes southwest of the Mont-Royal plateau is Montreal’s Mile End neighborhood, which was a Jewish neighborhood from World War I until the mid-1950s. The flagship bagel shop St-Viateur, which was opened in 1957 by Myer Lewkowicz, a survivor of the Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany, quickly gained great notoriety throughout the city. Each bagel is hand-rolled, boiled in honey water, and cooked in a wood-fired oven. About ten bagels are made per minute. „He was friends with the current owner, Joe Morena, and loved our bagels,“ says manager Saul Restrepo, who started working at the store in 1981 at the age of 16. Leonard Cohen had been a regular there since moving from Westmount to the Parc Du Portugal house.
