Die Hohe Kunst, einen Songtext zu übersetzen

Manchmal reicht auch die Textprojektion

Übersetzungen englischsprachiger Pop- und Rocksongs gibt es viele im Netz. Einige mit, einige ohne Richtigkeitsanspruch. In meinem Buch ZEN & POESIE – Das Leonard Cohen-Lexikon schreibe ich über die Schwierigkeit, Texte zu übersetzen. Bereits in meinem Buch Songs Of A Life machte ich schon darauf aufmerksam, m,an solle die Texte am Besten belassen, wie sie sind, und jeder bemüht sich um seine eigene „Text-Transformation“. Google-Translator liefert manchmal sogar bessere oder gleichwertige Textangebote, als so mancher sich begnatet fühlender Übersetzer.

Mir reichen Text-Transformation, die den Projektionen von Wort-Bidern genügend Raum geben. In diesem Sinne sind die hier angebotenen , wie auch in meinem Buch „ZEN & POESIE – DAS LEONARD COHEN_LEXIKON“  offerierten Text-Transformationen zu sehen.

Unter den Studioaufnahmen in der 8CD-/1DVD-Box befindet sich eine John Peel Session (1998), Besuche in der Sendung Drivetime und bei Mark and Lard (2003) und ein fantastischer Auftritt in der Radio 1 Live Lounge (2008). Auf der Liste der Livemitschnitte steht z. B. ihre wilde Performance in der Rock City Nottingham (1984), eine atemberaubende Show in Milton Keynes auf der Monster Tour 1995 (die erste nach einer sechsjährigen Unterbrechung), ein energiegeladener Auftritt als Headliner beim Glastonbury Festival im Jahr 1999 und eine Show in der St. James Church in London 2004, zu der man nur mit persönlicher Einladung Zutritt erhielt.

Die DVD beginnt mit dem Film Accelerating Backwards, einer 60-minütigen, detaillierten Retrospektive über R.E.M.‘s legendäre Auftritte bei der BBC. Bisher wurde der Film nur in Großbritannien ausgestrahlt und ist jetzt zum ersten Mal im Handel erhältlich. Besonders sehenswert sind die aufschlussreichen Interviews mit Peter Buck, Mike Mills und Michael Stipe, die die besondere Beziehung der Band zur BBC nochmal unterstreichen. Abgerundet wird die DVD mit einer Folge von Later….With Jools Holland aus dem Jahr 1998, die komplett R.E.M. gewidmet war, sowie Auftritten bei Top of the Pops und anderen Sendungen.
Der Begleittext vervollständigt das Bild mit weiteren spannenden Hintergrundinformationen. So erinnern sich z. B. einige bekannte BBC-Moderatoren und -Mitarbeiter an R.E.M., und wie es war, mit ihnen zu arbeiten – sowohl auf der Bühne als auch im Vorfeld bzw. nach den jeweiligen Auftritten. Die angesehene BBC-Moderatorin und -DJ Jo Whiley erzählt: “Ihr Auftritt in Glastonbury 1999 war unfassbar: Die Band galoppierte durch ein Set, das eigentlich nur aus Hits bestand. Sie waren ein mehr als würdiger Headliner, der Auftritt ein absoluter Triumphzug und für mich einer der besten Glastonbury-Momente aller Zeiten.” BBC-Produzent Mark Hagen sagt über einen Auftritt bei Top of the Pops im Jahr 2001: „Michael hat mir mal erzählt, dass er in Farben hört. Und das war einer der Abende, an denen man das Gefühl hatte, nur seine Hand ausstrecken zu müssen, um die Musik zu berühren, die sich herrlich grün durch den Raum rankte.“ Auch der Rockjournalist Tom Doyle hat für die Box eine Zusammenfassung der gesamten drei Jahrzehnte verfasst.

Zusätzlich zu dem umfangreichen Boxset erscheint The Best of R.E.M. at the BBC auch als 2CD und 2LP. Die ‘Best of‘-Kollektion bietet eine Auswahl der besten Studioauftritte und Livemitschnitte.
